All in all, reading it now and knowing what the rest of the series is like, I look for the hints and things that will connect up, later. Something I've noticed this time through especially is the hints at Barney being something special, which is followed up on in Greenwitch and Silver On The Tree. It's interesting how often he knows or intuits things which seem hidden from everyone else. while i am waiting for that,i will write a review for this book. obviously, there are going to be comparisons to that narnia series - british siblings shuttled off to a spooky house with secret passageways behind a wardrobe with an eccentric older relative and some christian mythology thrown in for funs. Due to its color and overall appearance, Serpentine is sometimes confused with Jade and other green gemstones. However, we know just how special this gemstone is, and we hope you love our Serpentine jewelry collection just as much as we do. Updated review---Wow! I can't believe I read this almost 7 years ago and still haven't returned to finish the series until now. It really is a great start to a story. Once again, I loved traipsing through the Cornish countryside with Simon, Jane, and Barney. The addition to this story of some King Arthur archaeology is fantastic and still one of the points I love best about this book. Bill Hoover reacts rudely and angrily after he has driven his bicycle into Jane. His reaction gives Jane, Barney, and Simon a negative first impression of him, and he later turns out to evil. What other foreshadowings are there in the novel? What other first impressions are accurate? One day not long after that, a burglar breaks into Grey House. Curiously, the burglar ignored traditional valuables like jewelry or cash and instead went straight for the bookshelves. The parents are mystified by this, but Simon, Jane, and Barney believe they know the truth: The burglar was looking for the old map manuscript. Now that they realize the value of the manuscript in their possession, the siblings decide it's time to come clean to Merriman about everything. After hearing their story, Merriman confirms what they were all thinking: The manuscript is a treasure map. Moreover, the treasure in question is none other than the Holy Grail for which Arthur's knights famously quested. And finally, Merriman admits that the children are in great danger, for there are forces of darkness--"The Dark," as he terms it--after the Grail who will stop at nothing to retrieve it. And while Merriman worries for their safety, he also encourages them to seek out the Grail so they can claim it on behalf of "The Light," as the alternative is too dark a possibility to bear. I haven't re-read them in years but they still stand out as some of, perhaps THE, best series of "fantastic" novels for children. The children work out the clues on the map and have a number of run ins with the Dark individually and as a group. While looking for the first clue Simon is chased by Mr. Hastings and Bill Hoover Jr.. After the second clue leads them to the headland at night, Simon, Jane, and Great Uncle Merry are ambushed and almost caught by Dark followers. Afterwards Barney is kidnapped and must be rescued. The children eventually follow the clues to a cave off the headland and discover the grail. Unfortunately they lose an important scroll from inside that is the key to deciphering the markings on the outside of the grail. Over Sea, Under Stone is in many senses, the typical children’s adventure story involving a seaside holiday, cliffs, a hidden treasure, adventure and danger, yet it has elements that make it much more. Our story opens with the Drew family, father, mother and most importantly for us, the three children, Simon, Jane and Barney arriving in Cornwall where they are to spend their holiday with their mother’s uncle, Great Uncle Merry (not a real uncle but a close family friend). They find that Great Uncle Merry has rented an old house, Grey House where they will all be staying. There is a housekeeper, Mrs Palk and a dog Rufus who ‘come with’ the house. Exploring the Grey House and creating their own adventure on a rainy day soon after they arrive, the children find an old manuscript with strange writing and a map. Simon can decipher some of it with the little Latin he has learnt at school but it is with Great Uncle Merry or Gumerry as Barney calls him, that they are able to understand what they’ve really found. A treasure map alright, but not an ordinary one, one that will lead them to an extraordinary treasure (related to King Arthur) and also expose them to great danger, for once again, the eternal battle between Dark and Light is coming to the fore. That night, the Grey House is burgled while everyone is sound asleep. The children decide it is time to confide in Great-Uncle Merry. Up on the headland they show him the map and he tells them that it is a copy of an even older map which shows the way to a hidden treasure and that the children are now in great danger. And so begins their quest for the Grail on behalf of the Light, which they have to achieve while being harried by Mr Withers and his sister, who are agents of the Dark, desperate to stop them at any cost. i had never read this series, but had always wanted to. so ariel straight up mailed it to me! like santa! in june!I wanted to like this but couldn't sink my teeth into the plot or characters. Jane, Simon, and Barney, go with their parents to Cornwall to visit their Uncle Merry. The three explore the old grey house and discover an ancient map that puts them on the quest for the Holy Grail. The forces of Dark want the map too for its unlimited power and with the help of Uncle Merry it is a mad race to see who can find it first. The threesome are not sure who is good or bad and their innocent trust oftentimes leads them to dangerous situations.
