About this deal

He was also the first openly gay man I had encountered and at a time when it was difficult and complicated for someone like him to navigate in the world.

He found this path stifling and entered a photography class taught by Minor White that would change the course of his life. I suspect that few are aware of the accomplishments of Baldwin Lee, who, photographing in the South 30 years ago, produced a body of work that is among the most remarkable in American photography of the past half century. I was a child of the 1960s, who was conscious of unfairness and justice, but the first trip I made to the south in 1983 awakened my politics. He grasped, thanks in part to his own upbringing as the son of Chinese immigrants, the oppressive systems and subtle conditioning that shaped the lives of those he met. An exhibition of works by Baldwin Lee will be on view from 22 September to 12 November 2022, at Howard Greenberg Gallery , 14 East 57th Street, 8th Floor, New York, New York. His story is a singular and surprising one, all the more so because the recent acclaim that has followed the rediscovery of his body of work is, he insists, of little consequence to him. What took so long for your work to be published, and how do you feel now that a physical book has been realized? BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is an unprecedented glimpse into the creative life of one of America’s most groundbreaking, influential and enduring artists. Like sedimentary rock laid down over millennia, each layer provides the foundation for later movements to build upon in series.

We spoke at length about his time with Minor White, and we managed to speak about a few masters like Frederick Sommer, who has influenced us both. The only impetus for public exposure of my work was to facilitate promotions in my position as a faculty member at a university. White strolled into lectures barefoot and encouraged his often bemused technology students to heighten their awareness of the creative process by practising meditation and reading Zen Buddhist texts. His modus operandi was to arrive in a new place, ask police which neighborhoods to avoid, then head directly to those places. There are visible signs of poverty: craggy front porches and screens riddled with holes; walls pockmarked and stained; roads muddy and branches bare.Réhahn discusses his groundbreaking new photographic series ''Memories of Impressionism,'' his artistic journey during and after Covid, and how modernity can draw inspiration from the past. Maybe because of Lee’s choice of antiquated equipment, they sometimes feel like they’re from a much earlier era, like the work of the Farm Security Administration in the Great Depression (Lee studied under FSA luminary Walker Evans). The Need to Know, a photo book, is my exploration of the meager details that emerged from brief and cryptic conversations with my father and my curiosity about Cold War espionage and its impact upon my family at the time.

Comprising a mere fraction of the estimated 10,000 photographs that Lee, the New York-born son of a Hong Kong emigrant, made on various extended road trips around Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana between 1982 and 1989, they are nevertheless a revelatory record of a time and a place and a people. The work is political, because it exposes the violence of poverty inherited from the plantation-economy past.Several years ago, a treasure trove containing some 6,000 original Bob Dylan manuscripts was revealed to exist. Some thirty years later, his first monograph has been published, Baldwin Lee, by Hunters Point Press, now in its second printing.
