About this deal

The programme follows the battle between the Starks and the other noble families of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros to gain control of the Iron Throne. The first is pretty good, combining plenty of trivia with lots of enthusiasm from Clarke - including a light-hearted attempt to justify her character’s actions in the last two episodes, and one or two wry nods by the producers to the fans’ less than ecstatic reactions. The final commentary track is less fun, but contains lots of lovely techy chat about cameras, lenses, lighting and shooting techniques if you like that sort of thing. For instance, while Samsung Q90R, Samsung Q900R and Philips (Europe) 65OLED+934 TVs handled the episode on 4K Blu-ray pretty well, a Sony 65AF9 OLED TV surprisingly couldn’t cope with the black levels at all, leaving the dark battle sequences looking grey and flat.

The interface for these features isn’t especially intuitive, but there’s a decent amount of extra information to be found if you’re willing to persevere. Which reminds us in no uncertain terms that HDR isn’t just about brightness; it’s also about enhanced black levels.Meanwhile, a deleted scene from season 8 explored a key moment between Sansa and Tyrion, and Tormund Giantsbane actor Kristofer Hivju revealed that the cast filmed an alternate ending to the entire show. Absolutely FANTASTIC Service, bought and paid for on Friday morning and arrived on Saturday morning!Years after a rebellion spurred by a stolen bride to be and the blind ambitions of a mad King, Robert of the house Baratheon (Mark Addy) sits on the much desired Iron Throne. All in all, I think it is a worthy conclusion to the many hours we invested in watching this brilliant series. As anyone who watched the series when it first aired might guess, it’s episode 3, The Long Night, that presents the biggest challenge to the 4K Blu-ray master.

Somewhat to my disappointment this proved more of less right, except that it wasn't on the Iron Throne. Particularly spectacular on the Philips OLED was the way relatively small but extremely bright areas of light, such as the fighters’ flaming swords and the burning projectiles the defenders of Winterfell launch at the army of the dead, stood out with phenomenal intensity against the inky night sky. Blu-Ray only: Game of Thrones: Reunion Special: A reunion show shot live in Belfast with the cast, both past and present, hosted by Conan OBrien and available exclusively on these complete series collections. It’s a smoke-swirling, flame-flickering, snow-flurrying, cloud-shifting, fast-cutting, motion-heavy, darkness-loving nightmare for any video compression system or low-contrast TV to handle.
