About this deal

Previously more mature expressions were also available, bottled at 10 and 15 years old, but these have been discontinued. Islay Smoke is one of the first two releases in the Alchemy Series; a beautifully balanced blend of unpeated grains with historic peated malts, including one from 1984. In 1995 Highland Distillers acquired the brand and promptly went about recentering the blends recipe around Islay malts. I was lucky enough to be able to get introduced to this around 2000 with the Highland Distillers version and its Islay recipe.

Although the lightly peated Bunnahabhain was at it's heart all Islay's working distilleries were represented and so Black Bottle became very phenolic. In this blend are all seven whiskys of the Scottish island of Islay united, they were married to the finest grain whiskys in Scotland. The brand was introduced in 1879 and was first produced by Aberdeen tea blenders Charles, David and Gordon Graham. Unfortunately, the finish doesn’t last too long, and you’re left with a hint of clove honey and ash. Highland Distilleries became part of The Edrington Group in 1999, and four years later Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay, along with the Black Bottle brand, was sold to Burn Stewart Distillers. Today’s Black Bottle boasts floral and oak aromas and fruit, smoke, honey and nutmeg flavours, with the Islay element in the blend being provided by Bunnahabhain. Since then, the non-vintage bottle has been dark green, but the 10-year-old and now discontinued 15-year-old bottles are coated with black plastic, giving the appearance of a truly black bottle. The finish makes me think of Bunnahabhain with that hint of smoke mixed with a nutty, and lightly spiced fruit. Supplies of the black glass bottle came from Germany and had to be abandoned after the start of World War I.

After many years of decline prompted by a distillery fire and subsequent business sale, Black Bottle was revitalised in 1990 by Burn Stewart Distillers with a new blend using Islay single malt whiskies. True to its name, the blend was initially presented in black glass, but this was sourced from Germany, and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 necessitated a switch to green glass. While the likes of Laphroaig and Ardbeg gave Black Bottle its most obviously phenolic Islay character, the blend was centred on the lightly-peated Bunnahabhain. You can view information on cookie use at any time via the privacy policy link at the bottom of any page on the site.
