About this deal

So I can’t knock Bose for the disappointment I feel when switching back to my normal glasses, which now seem so very primitive. There's a major difference in sound quality and loudness between the Tempo and the two everyday sunnies. No matter what your prescription needs are, whether it’s single vision, transition, bifocal, or varifocal (to name a few), Lensology can provide lenses for your Bose frames along with any sunglass lens you choose. Both the squarer Tenor (above) and Soprano (below) get slightly smaller 16mm drivers, but Bose claims that bass response has been noticeably improved compared to the original Frames. Open-style products like the standard AirPods and Galaxy Buds Live are one alternative, but then you still face the possibility of losing them.

We'd expect these to loosen up over time and use but when a colleague tried out the Frames Tempo, the arms were pressing down on his temples too tightly to assume they'd get better with use.

Sound quality is surprisingly good, albeit not as full or bassy as you’ll get from a dedicated pair of cans. There’s simply no comparison with bone conduction or similar other non-earbud personal audio technologies. But there’s a benefit to that chunky design: unlike the Tenor and Soprano Frames, which use a proprietary charger, the Tempo model has a regular USB-C connector on the left temple.

With these new models, you'll get more sound leakage, particularly from the Tempo, and in quieter environments people will hear whatever audio you're playing if you have the volume high. We offer all types of sunglasses lenses including polarised, transition, tinted and photochromatic options. They're definitely worth trying if they pique your interest and I found the Tempo appealing for running and biking despite looking goofy when I wore them. Touch controls are available for volume adjustment – again, on the right arm – with swipes forward and backward allowing you to decrease and increase volume respectively. This feature was not available in the previous generation of Bose Frames and is a welcome addition this time round. It should be easy to find compatible AR apps when more are added, as the Bose Connect app highlights them almost instantly. The Frames no longer sound like someone’s playing a song on their phone speaker two rooms away, and we were surprised by both the clarity and quality of the sound playing.

Yes, it’s weird for people to watch you speaking into thin air while walking, but it’s something we’ll take in our stride. Bose Frames keep track of the last eight devices to have paired and connected with them, dropping the least recently used when a new one is paired. The Bose Frames are an interesting concept and well-designed, but a few missing features and frustrations mean they’re not a must-have item for everyone just yet. But between the two of them, the Bose Frames really demonstrate that augmented reality can go beyond vision, and we hope to see more apps take advantage of this.Often we found them to last a little longer, but around four hours is the maximum we were able to get over our testing period. With a range of different frame options available for sports and fashion, the timeless designs coupled with unmatched audio technology means that there are audio frames to suit everyone.

Bose sells replacement lenses that users pop in and out themselves in a matter of seconds, no tools required. The one great thing about all three designs of the Bose Frames is that you can fit prescription lenses quite easily. The Bose Frames look like a regular set of sunglasses, with nylon frames and user-replaceable lenses, but hides sensors and speakers in the arms. Sharmishta is TechRadar's APAC Managing Editor and loves all things photography, something she discovered while chasing monkeys in the wilds of India (she studied to be a primatologist but has since left monkey business behind). There’s also considerable audio leakage at volume levels higher than 60%, so if you’re sitting near someone, they’ll be able to hear tinny sounds emanating from your sunglasses and, unfortunately, you'll need them at full volume to enjoy them over the sounds of public transport. Still, the sound is significantly better than what you get from even the best bone-conduction headphones like those from AfterShokz, which developed a pair of audio sunglasses but never shipped it. The Tenor fits my face better than the Soprano, which -- as its name implies -- Bose is aiming at women who like oversized sunglasses (my daughter likes them). That would have been a handy addition, but instead the glasses are charged via a proprietary cable that connects to a part inside the right arm of the product.
